AdC Competition Policy Award attributed to paper on competition and regulation of online
platforms

The second edition of the AdC Competition Policy Award is attributed to an academic work on regulating online platforms.

The paper, entitled “Regulating online platforms: lessons from 100 years of telecommunications regulation”, is authored by Friso Bostoen, Ph.D. researcher at the Institute for Consumer, Competition & Market (CCM) of the KU Leuven and surveys the history of regulation in telecommunications in the EU and US, extracting conclusions for the digital space with a view to providing policy-makers and enforcers with a toolbox to rationalize public measures towards platforms.

The Selection Committee unanimously distinguished this submission amongst 26 candidates.

It found the paper to be well-sourced, clearly structured and persuasively argued, as well as thoughtful, balanced and sophisticated. It further stressed the paper’s originality and relevant policy implications. The paper tackles a topical issue with a global approach, bringing together law and practice from both sides of the Atlantic, together with experience from sector regulation, thus providing policy-makers and competition enforcers with an effective roadmap for navigating the digital space.

Chaired by Maria João Melícias, Board Member of the AdC, the Selection Committee was composed of national and internationally renowned competition policy experts: Eleanor Fox (NYU School of Law), Frédéric Jenny (OECD), Johannes Laitenberger (General Court of the European Union), José Luís da Cruz Vilaça (CV Advogados, former Court of Justice of the European Union), Richard Whish (King's College London) and Sofia Oliveira Pais (Católica Porto Law School).

The AdC Competition Policy Award, attributed to an academic paper on competition policy every year, aims to advance a competition culture and encourage scientific research in competition law and economics.
