AdC alerts companies to reconcile sustainability and competition

Press Release 12/2024
May 29, 2024

The AdC warns companies to the need to reconcile sustainability objectives with a competitive perspective to avoid infringements of the Competition Law.
The transition to sustainable development may sometimes require collaboration between competing companies, although such agreements can hinder competition and may, as a result, be prohibited.
Therefore, companies must ensure that in pursuing sustainability goals, they do not breach Competition Law.
In order to further assist in this objective, the AdC issues a Best Practices Guide on Sustainability Agreements, currently open for public consultation.
The new guide provides information on exemptions, safeguards, and compatibilities for agreements between companies aiming to achieve economic, social, or environmental sustainability objectives.
Sustainability is a concept that seeks to promote harmony between economic, social, and environmental development, ensuring that the needs of the present are met without compromising the needs of future generations.
It represents a challenge for policymakers, citizens, and companies.
Competition contributes to consumer welfare and is an essential tool to encourage companies to promote more sustainable products or production processes.
The AdC aims to promote the reconciliation of these two objectives within its advocacy mission.
The Best Practices Guide on Sustainability Agreements is open for public consultation until June, 20.
